Refurbishment of Historic Market Hall

External refurbishment works to the Old Market House in Tiverton, built as the Corn Market in 1699 and rebuilt after the 1730 fire, have recently been successfully completed under the supervision of Assinder Turnham.
This historic building accommodates two retail units and a restaurant at ground floor and the offices of the Tiverton Almshouse Trust, who own the building, at first floor. All building users remained in occupation throughout: works were carefully planned to minimise disturbances.
The works involved the removal of inappropriate cementitious rendering and application of a more sympathetic lime putty render with lime wash finish and the renewal of natural slate roof coverings. Because of the Listed status of the building detailed discussions were of course required with the local authority prior to works commencing. Commenting upon the completed project, the Clerk & Treasurer to the Trust wrote “thank you for taking such care and attention to the project and for ensuring that all went as well as it did. It is always good news when the final account is less than the contract sum, but that is made all the better when the work is undertaken by a professional and friendly team …..”

An Assinder Turnham designed and supervised indoor leisure pool construction for a private client’s holiday home in a stunning Brendon Hills location finally completed this week. Despite the loss of an unprecedented total of in excess of five working weeks to seriously inclement weather, including snow drifts 60cm or more deep which shut the site (at an elevation of some 350m above mean sea level) for several weeks at a time and prolonged periods of torrential rain - only the plague of locusts was avoided - the home owner has now taken his first dip, declaring himself delighted with the results.

Assinder Turnham Ensure Prompt Re-opening of Flood Damaged Nursery

A popular children’s nursery in St Austell, Cornwall, was re-opened and is now operating as normal in mid February 2011 despite Assinder Turnham not having been instructed until mid December 2010. Assinder Turnham undertook an initial appraisal of the reinstatement works required further to a flooding incident, caused by a blocked culvert, in mid December. The necessary works were detailed in a specification document and put out to tender within days of instruction. Competitive tenders were received and reported upon to the insurers prior to the Christmas holiday. The successful contractor started work in the first week in the new year and completed, on time and within budget, in mid February. The works were undertaken in two phases to ensure that the nursery could continue to provide childcare throughout the works. Particular care in determining working methods was essential in order to comply with strict OFSTED Regulations governing the operation of children’s nurseries such as this.
This is typical of the fast response and implementation of works which Assinder Turnham is able to achieve using in depth experience and a pool of reliable contractors with whom a longstanding effective working relationship has developed.

Assinder Turnham have been instructed to specify, schedule works, tender, supervise and administer the contract for a futuristic house to be built in a prime location in South Wales for a long-standing Architect client (head of a major London based practice). Providing a tailor made service to suit, we will be working closely alongside both the client and his team of architects during the remainder of this year and throughout next year.

July saw Steve Turnham filming with Mentorn for the new series of the BBC programme ‘Cowboy Trap’, undertaking an expert inspection of a residential property whose owners, as Mentorn put it, had a “bad builder do some work”. Steve declared that this had been an interesting experience and refreshingly he can still be contacted direct, rather than by “getting his people to talk to your people”!
